Il “primo tutti i santi” è la celebrazione di Ognissanti, che cade il 1° novembre. Questa festa cristiana commemora tutti i santi, sia quelli conosciuti che quelli non canonizzati. È una festa di precetto, che indica un giorno festivo in cui si onora Dio.
La tradizione della festa di Ognissanti risale ai primi tempi della Chiesa cristiana. Inizialmente i santi venivano onorati nell’anniversario del loro martirio. Tuttavia, poiché il numero di martiri aumentò durante le persecuzioni romane, la Chiesa designò un giorno collettivo per onorare tutti i santi. Papa Gregorio III stabilì che il 1° novembre fosse il giorno ufficiale di Tutti i Santi nell’VIII secolo, una tradizione che Papa Gregorio IV estese a tutta la Chiesa cattolica nel IX secolo. Oggi in Italia Ognissanti è sia una solenne osservanza religiosa che un giorno in cui ci si riunisce in famiglia. È un giorno festivo, il che significa che le scuole e molte attività commerciali sono chiuse, permettendo alle famiglie di riunirsi. Anche se le pratiche variano da regione a regione, l ‘usanza più diffusa è quella di visitare i cimiteri per prendersi cura delle tombe dei propri cari. Le famiglie sono solite pulire le tombe e adornarle con fiori, soprattutto crisantemi, che in Italia simboleggiano la morte e il lutto.
