La Nebulosa del Ragno Rosso si trova a circa 1900 anni luce dalla Terra nella costellazione del Sagittario e offre la possibilità di studiare cosa accade in una nebulosa planetaria di questo tipo che si formano quando una stella simile al nostro Sole arriva alla fine della sua vita, diventa una gigante rossa per poi disperdere gli strati esterni nello Spazio (e lasciando solo il nucleo nudo). Si tratta di un fenomeno passeggero che può durare poche decine di migliaia di anni. Poco se si considera la concezione del tempo nello Spazio.
