Erano luoghi di incontro e affari, spesso decorati, dove i Romani socializzavano gomito a gomito, usando spugne su bastoncini (tersorium) per l’igiene personale, puliti poi nell’acqua.
Queste strutture monumentali, presenti in tutto l’Impero, testimoniano l’ingegneria idraulica romana, con un sistema che sciacquava i rifiuti verso la cloaca e raccoglieva l’urina per vari usi, come sbiancamento.
