L’ULTIMO ESERCITO DEI ROMANI Nel 622

durante la terribile “ultima guerra dell’antichità”, ovvero la guerra romano-persiana del 602-628, la situazione disperata dei Romani iniziò a giocare a loro favore. Avendo perso Egitto, Siria, Palestina, Cilicia, Armenia e Mesopotamia, i Romani furono in grado di concentrare tutte le truppe rimanenti in un singolo esercito, l’ultimo esercito dei Romani.

Nel 622, Eraclio radunò questo esercito in Bitinia (Nicomedia) mentre il nemico attaccava l’altipiano anatolico, con l’obiettivo di conquistarlo. Dopo aver esercitato i suoi uomini al punto di renderli una forza capace di operare come un vero esercito, Eraclio attraversò l’altipiano e riuscì ad ottenere un successo contro l’ancora imbattuto Shahrbaraz, uno dei due principali generali sasanidi. Nello stesso anno, però, gli Avari attaccarono Thessalonica: dalla mappa, si può capire come la stretta tra Avari e Persiani poteva essere mortale per l’Impero. Si comprende quindi come Eraclio fece di tutto per giungere ad un accomodamento con gli Avari: prima nel 623 (a rischio della sua vita) e poi nel 624, in preparazione di una nuova campagna persiana. Questi però, nel corso del 623, conquistarono Ancyra sull’altopiano anatolico e – con una nuova flotta mediterranea – presero Rodi, crocevia delle comunicazioni mediterranee.
