Un gesto che lega Arezzo a una simbolica, ma densa di significati, catena spazio-temporale: “di alberi ne avremo sempre più bisogno, anche in ambiente urbano, viste le loro importanti funzioni di ombreggiamento e assorbimento di anidride carbonica. Pensiamo solo, proprio in corrispondenza di questi giorni, alla differenza di vivibilità tra un viale con alberi e uno privo. Mi sono raccomandato che questo cipresso venga adeguatamente annaffiato per permettergli di raggiungere lo sviluppo degli altri circostanti”. Dalla Nuova Zelanda al suo estremo opposto, seguendo il sole nel suo ciclo temporale che dall’alba degli antipodi, attraverso i cinque continenti, porta al tramonto in un altro arcipelago del Pacifico, l’intero pianeta celebra dunque con migliaia di nuovi alberi la giornata mondiale istituita dalle Nazioni Unite proprio in occasione dell’anniversario della nascita, il 18 luglio 1918, di un’icona del XX secolo della lotta al razzismo e alla discriminazione in nome dell’impegno civile e della riconciliazione. I principi personificati dal leader sudafricano si legano idealmente a un’ulteriore valore cardine dell’epoca attuale: il rispetto per l’ambiente, declinato in giustizia climatica e sicurezza alimentare. Il Mandela Day 2023 ricorre peraltro nel decimo anniversario della morte di “Madiba”.
