AREZZO – Il gruppo vuole ricordare e valorizzare l’artista catalano nel cinquantenario dalla morte. Vallmitjana visse ad Arezzo e fu amico di Neruda e di altri mostri sacri della cultura del Novecento. In cantiere tante iniziative. Nel 2024 si ricordano i 50 anni dalla morte di Abel Vallmitjana (1910/1974), pittore, scultore, incisore, musicologo e studioso di folklore spagnolo, considerato una delle figure artistiche più importanti e influenti tra quelle vissute ad Arezzo nella seconda metà del Novecento
Nella frazione di Tregozzano, dove Vallmitjana visse l’ultimo periodo della sua vita, il centro di aggregazione sociale “L’incontro”, in collaborazione con la locale parrocchia e l’associazione “Officina del Ruzzo”, ha dato inizio dalla scorsa primavera al parco artistico “Abel Vallmitjana Taller”, un museo d’arte contemporanea a cielo aperto. Nei giardini del Praticino, di fronte alla Biblioteca “Città di Arezzo”, la scultura di bronzo dell’artista catalano è stata finalmente dotata di una targa che ne ricorda l’autore. L’opera “La Hermana y la Herida”, questo il suo nome, fu intitolata così su suggerimento del grande poeta cileno Pablo Neruda, amico intimo di Vallmitjana, che durante un soggiorno ad Arezzo nei primi anni Sessanta ne ammirò il calco in gesso. Il bollettino annuale della Brigata Aretina degli Amici dei Monumenti, uscito di recente, dedica invece un capitolo all’artista grazie al contributo scritto da Marco Botti, che ne ripercorre le principali tappe artistiche e di vita. Sempre ad Arezzo il gruppo “Incontro”, da tempo al lavoro per recuperare la memoria dell’artista, ha dato vita nel mese di novembre al comitato promotore “Vallmitjana e gli altri”, con l’obiettivo di organizzare una serie di iniziative a breve, medio e lungo termine per valorizzare un personaggio che tra la fine degli anni Cinquanta e la prima metà degli anni Settanta del secolo scorso segnò l’arte e la cultura cittadina. L’associazione si è dotata di un organigramma. Presidente è stata nominata Gabriella Vagheggi, che fu assistente di Vallmitjana nel laboratorio di arti grafiche aperto a Tregozzano e dopo la morte dell’artista portò avanti per anni l’attività incisoria e la stamperia, diventando la memoria più autorevole di quegli anni. Coordinatori del comitato sono Nanni Cheli, Gianfranco Landini, Maria Rosa Marchi ed Enrico Orlandini. Come garante scientifico è stato scelto Michele Loffredo, mentre Marco Botti svolgerà i compiti di addetto stampa e portavoce. Il periodo in esame, pur essendo storicizzato, è indagato solo in minima parte – afferma il comitato. – Purtroppo cominciano a perdersi le tracce per poterne ricostruire le vicende storico artistiche, essendo ormai scomparsi tutti i protagonisti di quella che è stata la stagione culturale novecentesca più importante per la città e le sue vallate, tanto che molto tempo dopo Pier Francesco Greci ebbe a definire quegli anni ‘l’ultimo periodo di splendore per Arezzo’. Il territorio aretino è noto soprattutto per il ricco patrimonio culturale e per la qualità delle opere d’arte medievale e moderna. Meno divulgata è invece la conoscenza del patrimonio d’arte contemporanea. Il centro di aggregazione sociale ‘L’incontro’ e il comitato promotore ‘Vallmitjana e gli altri’ intendono realizzare varie iniziative, d’interesse locale e internazionale, per recuperare la memoria di quel periodo e consegnarla alle nuove generazioni”. La vita e la carriera di Abel Vallmitjana sono pagine affascinanti da riscoprire. L’artista nativo di Barcellona giunse ad Arezzo nella seconda metà degli anni Cinquanta, dopo una vita fatta di viaggi ed esperienze che lo avevano segnato dal punto di vista artistico e umano. Il catalano, oppositore del regime franchista, lasciò la sua terra nel 1938 per vivere da esule inizialmente a Parigi e quindi in Venezuela. Durante la permanenza in Sud America fece ricerche sul folklore locale, realizzò affreschi, bassorilievi e sculture per committenze pubbliche e private, prese parte alla fondazione della Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo de la Universidad Central di Caracas. In Venezuela conobbe la seconda moglie, Clarisa Silva, con la quale si trasferì in Italia. I due andarono a vivere a Villa Guillichini di Tregozzano, acquistata assieme a Miguel Otero Silva, noto giornalista e poeta. Nella piccola frazione a nord di Arezzo lo spagnolo trovò il luogo ideale per iniziare una nuova fase della sua vita. Nel 1957 egli espose con la sua prima personale aretina alla Galleria Minima, inserendosi subito nel fermento culturale di Arezzo del periodo. Le solide amicizie con alcuni mostri sacri della letteratura portarono nella campagna aretina premi nobel come Pablo Neruda, Gabriel Garcia Marquez e Miguel Ángel Asturias Rosales, ma anche autori del calibro di Rafael Alberti, Jorge Guillén e Salvador de Madariaga. Ben presto la villa divenne il “salotto” della cultura aretina per eccellenza, dove i talenti artistici e gli intellettuali locali entrarono in contatto con figure di respiro internazionale. Vallmitjana scomparve per un ictus nel 1974 e oggi riposa nel cimitero di Puglia assieme all’amata Clarisa. Al neonato comitato “Vallmitjana e gli altri” stanno già aderendo noti personaggi della cultura cittadina e le principali realtà artistiche e culturali del territorio aretino.
