Infatti, dopo una prigionia di 55 giorni, le BR decisero di concludere il sequestro nel più tragico dei modi: uccidendo Aldo Moro. terroristi lo fecero salire nel portabagagli di un’automobile Renault 4 rossa dicendogli di doverlo trasportare altrove, ma una volta coricato e nascosto da una coperta, gli spararono dieci proiettili. Aldo Moro fu uno dei fondatori della Democrazia Cristiana, suo rappresentante alla Assemblea Costituente, del quale divenne prima segretario nel 1959 e poi presidente nel 1976. Inoltre fu Ministro della Giustizia, della Pubblica Istruzione e per quattro volte Ministro degli Esteri. È stato anche cinque volte Presidente del Consiglio dei Ministri, e ha guidato governi di centro-sinistra tra il 1963 e il 1968 e poi tra il 1974 e il 1976 promuovendo la strategia dell’attenzione verso il Partito Comunista Italiano attraverso il cosiddetto compromesso storico. Il 16 marzo 1978, giorno della presentazione del nuovo governo, il quarto guidato da Giulio Andreotti, la Fiat 130 che stava trasportando Moro dalla sua abitazione nel quartiere Trionfale di Roma alla Camera dei deputati, fu intercettata da un commando delle Brigate Rosse all’incrocio tra via Mario Fani e via Stresa. I militanti delle BR uccisero i cinque uomini della scorta del politico, Domenico Ricci, Oreste Leonardi, Raffaele Iozzino, Giulio Rivera, Francesco Zizzi, e sequestrarono Moro. Lo trattennero nel covo di via Camillo Montalcini 8 per 55 giorni di prigionia, proprio fino al 9 maggio dello stesso anno, giorno nel quale il rapimento, che aveva sconvolto il Paese, finì bruscamente con la sua uccisione.

Infatti, verso le 12:30 i brigadisti riuscirono a effettuare la telefonata al professor Francesco Tritto, uno degli assistenti di Moro, nella quale, con tono freddo chiesero a Tritto, “adempiendo alle ultime volontà del presidente”, di comunicare subito alla famiglia che il corpo di Aldo Moro si trovava nel bagagliaio di una Renault 4 rossa, “i primi numeri di targa sono N5…”, in via Caetani. Il corpo esanime fu rinvenuto seguendo le indicazioni della telefonata, e quindi a Roma in via Caetani, emblematicamente vicina sia a piazza del Gesù, dov’era la sede nazionale della Democrazia Cristiana, sia a via delle Botteghe Oscure, dove era la sede nazionale del Partito Comunista Italiano. Nello stesso giorno fu ritrovato anche Peppino Impastato, ucciso dalla mafia sui binari della ferrovia Palermo-Trapani.
